Historical Background

Georgia Tech was established on October 13, 1885, as one of the attempts by the state to revive the economy of the post-civil war South. This was aimed at setting up a technical school that would produce talented workers and engineers to facilitate industrial progress. The school, which then was called the Georgia School of Technology, began in 1888 with only 84 students and a single building and had only one degree, which was mechanical engineering. As time went by, the school was able to have more academic programs such as electrical, civil and chemical engineering.

The name of the institution was modified in 1948 to the Georgia Institute of Technology as it now had a larger academic scope and a mission more oriented towards research. Georgia Tech established itself in the 20th century, between and after the World War II, as an industry in the development of technological innovation, particularly where it evolved into signing studies in aeronautics, electronics, and materials research. Georgia Tech is one of the most prominent institutions of education, research and entrepreneurship in the world today.

Campus and Facilities

Georgia tech is located on approximately 400 acres of land within midtown Atlanta with a picturesque mixture of old fashioned and advanced technology. The campus boasts of high-tech laboratories, high-tech research centers, and eco-friendly buildings. Such cultural symbols are Tech Tower, which is one of the oldest structures on campus, and Kessler Campanile, a modern representation of the innovation at Georgia Tech.

The university also has satellite campuses and research facilities all over the globe and some of them are Georgia Tech Lorraine campus located in Metz, France and Georgia Tech-Shenzhen in China. These study programs accentuate the international collaboration and students have a chance to study and conduct research in foreign countries.

The facilities of Georgia Tech also cover more dedicated research institutes like the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) which performs applied research on behalf of government and industry clients in fields like national defense, cybersecurity, and robotics.
